Becoming More Fully Yourself: Trusting your innate potential.
The humanistic approach is rooted in the belief that every person has an innate capacity for growth, healing and self-discovery.
Carl Rogers, one of the founders of the person-centred approach, believed that people thrive when they experience empathy, acceptance and authenticity. Rather than being told who they should be, individuals are supported to reconnect with who they already are.
Many of us move through life adapting to expectations, responsibilities, relationships and experiences that can sometimes pull us away from ourselves. We may begin to lose sight of our own needs, values and feelings as we focus on meeting the needs of others.
A person-centred approach offers an opportunity to pause and listen inwardly.
It is not about fixing yourself.
It is not about becoming somebody else.
It is about creating the conditions where growth can naturally emerge.
Just as a seed holds the potential to become a flower, Rogers believed that every person possesses an innate tendency towards growth, fulfilment and wellbeing when given the right conditions.
🌼 Gentle Reflection
When do you feel most like yourself?
Which parts of yourself have you learned to hide?
What would it feel like to offer yourself the same compassion you offer others?
If nothing about you needed fixing, what might you begin to notice?
🦋 A Daisydot Thought
Growth often begins with acceptance.
The more gently we meet ourselves, the more space we create for change.
